Natural childbirth has been the around for centuries, it is only recently that another option has existed. Critics would tout that modern medicine has improved outcomes such that it is the only option to be trusted. The numbers however, show a different story. The most sure path to a healthy mom and healthy baby is to keep intervention and surgery to a reasonable level. The WHO states that cesarean rates should be 10-15% to optimize outcomes. In the US today, the rate is double that - over 30% in most areas. So how can we change that? What can we do? Trust birth, trust our bodies and centuries of mothers before us! Know that you can birth naturally and that the cascade of intervention leading to surgery often begins with pain medication. Choose a supportive care team wisely and be prepared for the work ahead. A natural birth is not easy, but it is worth it. It changes and empowers women to live to their fullest potential. It given them confidence to face future challenges head on.
"birth is not only about making babies. birth is about making mothers...strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength." - Barbara Katz Rothman
when natural isn't an option:
As Dr. Robert A. Bradley said "natural childbirth is the best and safest route" but sometimes things are outside the range of normal. It is then that information and communication become the key to a safe and satisfying experience.
